EXPLORE THE HIP SIDE OF MACAO
  • Shop, sip, and shave in the emerging St. Lazarus Arts Precinct
  • Discover the creative scene transforming a centuries-old neighborhood
  • Delve into Macao’s history and trace its remarkable transformation

At the heart of the Bairro de São Lázaro—a 20-minute drive from Conrad Macao—the St. Lazarus Arts Precinct is an emblem of the region’s burgeoning creative community. Set around the landmark St. Lazarus Church (one of the oldest in Macao, first established in the 1550’s), the neighborhood’s ochre facades and cobbled pedestrian lanes conjure the Portuguese era, and offer a low-rise retreat from modern Macao. But a new generation of artists and entrepreneurs is now transforming the district with indie boutiques, galleries, and hip upstarts. We especially love the One Creative Arts Department Store, a brilliant two-story shopping concept with 7,000 square feet of retail space given over to local makers and entrepreneurs. Here you can browse for unique “Made in Macao” souvenirs that go well beyond the usual beef jerky and almond cookies—from inventive fashion accessories to cosmetics to chic homewares, all of it designed and/or made locally. Next door, cool your heels at the brilliant Beer Temple, with its sleek mod interior and enticing selection of craft beers from around the globe. (Pro tip: happy hour runs from 6:30pm to 10pm on weeknights.) Right down the road, our male guests love indulging in a traditional hot-towel wet shave at the 2Legit Barbershop, a favorite of our Director of Operations, Rudy Fao. The friendly, inked-up staff all speak English, and they’ll even make out-calls to the hotel. Finally, you can get a good overview of the region’s history and heritage at the Macau Story House, a small museum and reading room established in 2012, located down the street from St. Lazarus Church. One could spend 15 minutes or several hours here perusing archival photos, books, and, best of all, several centuries’ worth of vintage maps, showing how land reclamation has transformed the Macao Peninsula.

The St. Lazarus Arts Precinct (a.k.a Bairro de São Lázaro) is on the Macao Peninsula. A taxi from the hotel to the St. Lazarus Church, at its center, should take 20 to 25 minutes depending on traffic. All the locations below are within walking distance of the church.
